Meditation For Beginners: How To Meditate

Meditation For Beginners: How to Meditate.  This will teach you everything you need to know to get started with meditation.

Here, I am sharing the story of how I believe I was healed of my chronic illnesses (lupus, heart failure, PTSD, and more) through meditation. During my spiritual awakening, my spirit guides instructed me to meditate and here I share the story of what happened because of it.

“Can you teach me how to meditate?” This has to be the number one question I get asked! This is actually the entire reason that this blog or that my YouTube channel exists! Let me explain.

As it became general knowledge that I was into meditation and that I firmly believed that it changed my life, people began coming out of the woodwork to ask me to teach them. People I know and people I don’t. Nearly every day at work, someone will show up at my desk or stop me in the halls and say, “I was told you can help me learn how to meditate (or about crystals, or spirit guides, etc). Can we go to lunch or something and you can help me learn?”

So, we would spend some time talking about it and by the end of the conversation they would inevitably say, “You should really teach this stuff.” And I would say, “Yeah, I know.” lol Not only is it valuable and vital information for everyone on this planet, but they can see how excited I am by it. I am very passionate about this subject and it shines through.

So what is it about meditation that makes me so passionate?

The bottom line is this…meditation comes with a 100% guarantee that it will change your life for the better. 100%. I will sit that number there and just let you think about that for a minute. What else in life comes with that kind of a guarantee? When presented with that kind of a claim, why would you NOT at least give it an honest try to see if I’m right?

For thousands of years people have been meditating and as usual it has taken western science a while to catch up, but they finally have. The countless benefits of meditation have now been widely documented in scientific research.  I will list many of them in this post, but you can certainly research this for yourself as well. In this day and age it is no secret that meditation comes with a plethora of benefits to your health and well-being.

What is meditation?

Let’s start at the beginning.  Meditation is when you purposely slow your mind and body down with the intention to stay in the moment and clear your mind. It involves turning your attention to one single point of focus such as your breathing, a mantra, a sound, etc in an attempt to still the mind.

There are three main parts to what makes up a person…the soul, the personality, and the ego. Let’s call a spade a spade. For most of us, the personality and the ego are pretty much running the show most of the time, am I right? The goal is to get those two parts to simmer down and use their indoor voices and allow the soul to take the drivers seat in your daily life.

Why?  Well, the natural state of our souls is to be one with the Divine. It is peace, love, infinite compassion, slow to anger, peace, joy, kindness, gentleness, self-control, etc. our natural state is all of those “fruits of the spirit” that you learned about in church. And when you allow your soul to take the lead instead of your ego, you will naturally begin exhibiting those characteristics and living in a more peaceful state.

Meditation is a tool that helps to make that happen.  I like to use an analogy of a glass of water.  Imagine that you have a glass of water sitting on the table and you dump a cup full of dirt into it.  It is now all sooty, filthy, and dirty.

Now, tell me the easiest way to get that water clear again.  You could try fancy filters and whatnot, but the easiest way to get that water clear again is to simply let it sit still.  As the water sits still, all of that dirt that was stirring around will stop and settle to the bottom, leaving the water clear.

It is the same with your mind and your thoughts.  When you are stressed, have a racing mind…whatever the situation may be…giving yourself time and space to simply sit still will clear your mind and quiet all of those noisy, clanky parts of your personality down.  It allows you a space of clarity and a peaceful perspective.

In addition to the emotional benefits, meditation gives plenty of physical benefits…

In addition to helping your mood, those benefits spill over onto your health. Meditation has been proven to help with the following…

  • stress reduction

  • lowered levels of the stress hormone cortisol (which means lower inflammation)

  • better sleep

  • lower anxiety

  • improved mood and a more positive outlook on life

  • lower blood pressure

  • improved heart and respiratory rates

  • lengthened attention span

  • increased grey matter in your brain

  • decrease in age-related memory loss

  • better pain control

  • improved cognitive and intellectual abilities (you become smarter)

  • increased creativity

  • increased problem solving

  • a longer life expectancy

  • improved immune system

  • and an improved sense of well-being.

When should I meditate?

Meditation is a practice. It builds on itself. If you meditate a few times per week you will still see some benefit from it, but you will see the real benefits when you are meditating for at least 15 minutes every day.

Where should I meditate?

Anywhere you can think of! But ideally somewhere quiet and comfortable where you won’t be disturbed.

How do I meditate?

It is as simple as sitting quietly with your feet flat on the ground, or cross legged on the floor. Rest your hands in your lap and gently close your eyes. You can choose to listen to meditation music or a video.  Or you cam simply sit in the quiet and focus on your breathing.

Breathe in slowly to the count of five, and breathe out slowly to the count of seven. Repeat over and over…breathe in, breathe out. Let your out-breath be slightly longer than your in-breath.

Eventually you will notice that your breathing will settle into a slightly more shallow, even rhythm as your mind quiets down. The goal is to sit quietly without judging what is happening. Your only job is to show up and make the effort to be still.

And the honest truth is that when you first start, you will probably have what is affectionately called, “monkey brain” for a while.  This is when your thoughts are jumping all over the place like a playful monkey.  As you continue your practice this will improve.

It is impossible to do meditation wrong.  I’ve heard some people say this.  They say, “I’ve tried meditating but I can’t do it.  It doesn’t work for me.  I do it wrong.”  There is no such thing as doing it wrong.  Just keep going.  If you are making the effort and setting the intention to show up, sit still, and attempt to have a peaceful mind, then it will eventually happen.

If it is taking you a while to get going, then have some compassion for yourself because that means you must have had a REALLY busy mind.  There was a lot going on in there.  And then be proud of yourself for changing things so that your mind will have an easier time of it.

Another analogy I like to use is that of a train station.  Imagine you are sitting on a bench in a busy train station.  You are watching the trains come and go, but you never get on any of them.  You simply sit peacefully and observe.  This is the same with your mind during meditation.  Your thoughts are the trains.

Your job is to sit peacefully on the bench and simply allow.  It is none of your business how many thoughts come and go and it is not your place to control it.  Your only job is to not get on the train.  You allow the thoughts to roll in and then allow them to roll out, all without grabbing on.  If you notice that you have grabbed onto a thought and have begun thinking about the thought, merely let it go.  Just like a balloon with helium…simply open your hand and let it float away without another thought.

I will try to give a very quick, nutshell version of my meditation story.  About four years ago, I was not in a very good place physically or emotionally.  I had been dealing with more than one chronic illness and I had been dealing with the effects of PTSD.  I was on a mile-long list of medications and was on chemo once per month to try to get my lupus under control. Besides the lupus, I was dealing with fibromyalgia, osteoporosis (from all of the steroids I was on and had already had three fractures before the age of 40), congestive heart failure, chronic/recurrent pericarditis, severe migraines with stroke-like symptoms as my aura, asthma and severe allergies (to everything), and I had just been put on synthroid because apparently I had a brand-new hypothyroid issue.  I was heavy on ambien because of the severe insomnia and the horrible nightmares I would have when I did eventually fall asleep (hello PTSD).

I was a mess.  And I felt like it.  So when I first learned about spirituality and my spirit guides (if you would like a video/blog on this subject, please comment and let me know!), one of the questions I asked them, “If you could only talk to me today, what one piece of advice would you want to give me?”  The response I got was, “Pray more, drink more water, sleep more, and meditate.”

Before this, I had never seriously thought about meditating.  I was like, “really?”  And they said, “Yes.  Start today.  It will change your life.  And would you consider coming off of the ambien?”  I was like NO WAY.  NOT HAPPENING.  I was almost offended that they would even ask me because as my spiritual team they should have known that it was my lifeline!  But they said, “Yes.  Trust us.  If you begin meditating, you will not have trouble sleeping anymore.  It will be okay.”

So, I did.  I stopped the ambien that day and have never taken another one.  And I googled “how to meditate” and began that day and have never stopped.  And they were right (as they are prone to be)…IT. CHANGED. MY. LIFE.  I cannot over-state that.  It changed everything about my life for the better.  Within months my lupus was in remission for the first time in 25 years.  I was not only OFF of the chemo, but my steroid dose went from 60mg…to 40…to 30…to 20….on and on.  I am currently on 1mg (that’s right…ONE) every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  And I have been given permission to try and wean off of that whenever I want.  But I’ve been on it for so many years that this last little bit is tricky so it may take some time.

My PTSD is all but gone.  I sleep like a baby.  My asthma is totally controlled.  I have been sick in the past few weeks and needed to use my inhaler and it’s expired because it’s been so long since I’ve had to use it!  I had a bone density scan this week and was told, “Who told you that you have osteoporosis?  Because your bones are completely fine.  I don’t even show you in the osteopenia  stage.”  My response was, “Wow, meditation even healed my bones!”  The lady just stared at me like I was crazy lol, but you will not convince me that it didn’t.

My “thyroid issue” is gone and is like it never existed.  My cholesterol is normal, my heart failure is resolved, and I haven’t had a flare up of the pericarditis in a few years (where I was having 3 or four flares per year before). I am completely off of all migraine/neurologic medication and haven’t had a migraine in years.

And my mood is better!  I am no longer stressed, anxious, sad…none of that.  I can say with all honesty that every day of my life is filled with joy and peace.  I love being in my life and I am lucky and blessed to be in this world.

Everything about my health that was chronic and flared up before has resolved since I began meditating.  I, of course, cannot guarantee that every one of your issues will resolved, but I can guarantee that something will.  Even if it is merely an improved mood and outlook.  But my suspicion is that if you make an honest attempt at this, you will have plenty of physical benefits as well.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE?

DIVE IN!  Begin today.  Find a quiet spot (even if it’s in the bathroom) and stick your earbuds in and sit quietly for 15 minutes.  If you can only do five, then do five!  Just start.

The only way to begin is to begin.

Below I have listed the videos that I found on that very first day of searching how to meditate.  I have listened to one (or sometimes more when I’m feeling like it) of these every single day since 2015.  I simply choose whichever one speaks to me that day and play it.

There are SO many out there!  If you don’t like these, find ones that you do like.  Play around and make it yours!  You won’t regret it!

This one covers all of the chakras and is 20 minutes long:
