Mercury is in Retrograde: What Does That Even Mean?

I’m sure you’ve heard someone, at some point or another, talk about Mercury being in retrograde. And they were probably blaming it for wreaking all kinds of havoc! One of the questions I get asked most often is, “What does Mercury being in Retrograde” even mean?  Here is the quick, simple answer to that question.

So what does this mean? Well, here are the basics… It happens three times each year and it is when Mercury appears to reverse it’s path and move backwards through the zodiac. I say “appears” because it only looks that way from Earth. It is, in fact, continuing to move as it normally does. It’s just the perspective we have from our vantage point that makes it look this way.  And it’s not specific to Mercury, all of the other planets do this too.

In western astronomy, any “Retrograde” period typically means trouble and chaos of some sort. It means that things in life will be working backwards, or opposite, of what we would normally expect.

For example, Mercury is typically associated with communication, media, travel, and technology.  So, during “Mercury in Retrograde”, you can expect to run into trouble in these areas. It’s not uncommon during one of these retrogrades to have miscommunications with those around us, miscalculations, cancelled travel plans or delayed flights, computer or phone issues, etc.

Because of the whole miscommunication thing, these periods are notorious for causing issues with contracts and other things of that sort. So, don’t enter into any legally binding contract while Mercury is in retrograde unless you absolutely cannot avoid it. And if you can’t, read the fine print!

The good news is that this retrograde will only last around three weeks and then all will be right in the world again (and you’ll have to start take responsibility for your own stuff again). 😉
